In 2001, the Museum of Modern Art in New York asked Emeco and Philippe Starck to design a stool for a Ludwig Mies van der Rohe retrospective. The museum’s request was simple: Create a stool that Mies would have chosen for the exhibition himself. Simple and straightforward, the Emeco Stool (2001) is made using the same 77-step process that Emeco perfected to satisfy the military’s need for lightweight, corrosion-resistant chairs for submarines. The company’s proprietary metal processing method yields aluminum three times stronger than steel – and a stool so durable that it has an estimated life span of 150 years.
